Karate is a Japanese Martial Art whose physical aspects seek the development of defensive and counterattacking body movements to be used as self-defense. Karate has 3 main disciplines; kihon where students learn fundamental techniques, kata where techniques are learned in a sequence and kumite where students use techniques against an opponent.
Karate also has many mental and moral aspects which aims to improve the character of the individual through discipline and respect. The clubs name is derived from the word ‘ikigai‘, a Japanese concept that means “a reason of being” which further highlights the importance of spirituality in the participation of karate.
